HealthConnect Systems Adopts Innovative Green Benefits Program for Clients and Employees
November 13, 2008 - HealthConnect Systems, the leading online network for buyers and sellers of health insurance and employee benefits, has launched an innovative green initiative in which the company and its employees work together to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions required to operate the company to zero. HealthConnect will also provide incentives and assistance for clients that would like to do the same.
HealthConnect estimates that operation of the company results in 320 tons of CO2 emissions per year. To reduce this to zero, the company will implement initiatives that reduce the amount of gasoline, electricity and paper consumption from the company’s operations as well as provide financial incentives to its employees to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their personal lives. The company and its employees will fund greenhouse gas reduction projects in an amount necessary to offset the remaining CO2 emissions of the company.
“All of our employees worked together to design this program and are all enthusiastic about working for an environmentally responsible company,” commented Peter Everett, President and CEO of HealthConnect Systems. “We also believe that since most of our clients advise companies about their employee benefit programs, we are in a natural position to promote the adoption of this program to others, hopefully on a large scale.”
To reduce the company’s gas and electricity consumption and paper waste, HealthConnect has put in place several measures. These measures include purchasing hybrid cars for its employees to drive when on company business; implementing electronic billing and payments; starting a paperless office; setting up a formal recycling program in all offices; and implementing power management across all workstations.
In addition, HealthConnect has also offered financial incentives to its employees to promote environmentally beneficial behavior changes in their personal lives. The company provides financial compensation to employees that purchase high mileage vehicles; take advantage of car pooling, walking or bicycling to work; subscribe to services that reduce the amount of received junk mail; enroll in programs that require the utility to purchase electricity used to power the employees home from wind, hydro or other green sources; and choosing energy efficient appliances for their homes (high efficiency lights, new windows, solar energy, tankless water heaters and/or new furnace for their homes).

HealthConnect is also extending this program to its clients and will match ten percent of all client funding of green benefits programs (up to one percent of their total HealthConnect billing) to encourage them to adopt similar programs.
HealthConnect Systems will follow the progress of its green program throughout the year and report the results on its blog.
